News - Dynamics of goods turnover of carcases in Ukrainian harbors
Increase in cargo turnover in Ukrainian harbors is observed during past three years and continues this year. So, in the end of may container cargo handling in Ukrainian harbors has exceeded 5 million tons, that is almost 19% more, than for the same period of time last year.
According to the press service state enterprise “Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority” (USPA), relevant information was voiced during Ukrainian Ports Forum 2019 in Odesa last week.
According to и.о. representative of USPA Rajvis Veckagans, currently specialized container and grain terminals in Ukrainian harbors develop the most dynamic. «Now USPA together with two leading international companies ― French CMA CGM and German HHLA ― implements in Odessa harbor investment projects, aimed at increasing power of their container terminals and improvement of technical options Strategy of developing of sea harbors of Ukraine, till 2038 container handling has to increase more than 2 times and get closer to 2 million TEU», ― he reminded.
Participants of Ukrainian Ports Forum 2019 have noted, that Ukraine has big potential of development of container cargo handling. Among key recommendations for development of this trend they have noted simplification of port and customs procedures as soon as possible, as well as active introduction of modern program decisions in this sphere. When choosing the route potential clients consider speed and simplicity of procedure at all stages of logistics chain, as well as the presence of developed transport net, including car and railway transport. It will not only to hold a positive trend of transshipment increase, that has been observed since 2018, but also to significantly strengthen it.
Development of transport infrastructure in Ukraine can’t become that key factor, that may attract companies, using more western routes now for shipping of goods for instance, from China to Europe. Improvement of infrastructure has to aslo consider availability of transshipment centers, for example, inland ports, on the borders with Belarus, Romania, Poland and other countries, where container terminal operators could work.
According to head of procurement in South Europe of container line Maersk Иренеи Виллар Карилло, positive dynamics shown by Ukrainian harbors in container handling, as well as stabilization of economics and increase in consumer demand create premises for creation in eastern part of Black sea of container hub. Development of terminal power in harbor of Odessa in successful job of specialized terminals in harbors «Yuzhny» and «Chernomorsk» also contribute this, notes executive director Cosco Shipping Lines (Ukraine) Wang Hinliang.
However, according to experts, also exists a number of factors. So, president of company HHLA Philip Swens noted, that political instability and insufficient development of railway infrastructure discourages the creation of a regional transshipment center in Ukraine. Also according to him the level of grain containerization ―expert basis of Ukrainian harbors ― can be much bigger. Managing director Mediterranean Shipping Company (Ukraine) Rashid Buda drew attention to existing restrictions passage of large vessels through the Bosphorus Strait, as well as to the need for an appropriate volume of cargo flow to work in hub mode in Ukrainian harbors.
Summarizing the discussion, member of the Supervisory Board state enterprise «USPA», expert of World bank on development of harbor infrastructure Wolfgang Hurtien noted, that on most of these issues of USPA with the participation of the state, stevedores and other companies, responsible for the development of transport infrastructure on national level, already works. Further increasing competitiveness of Ukrainian harbors has to strengthen their positions in Azov-Black Sea basin.
CEO of Maersk Ukraine Roman Koloyanov predicts, that container transport market growth in Ukraine will slow down since 2020. «This year will be the last year of active growth because we are recovering after previous years fall. And 2020 will depend heavily on, what will be the economic climate in the country. If there are investments, there will be growth. If there will be no investments, growth rates will slow down significantly», — he said on the sidelines of Ukrainian Ports Forum 2019.
Container transshipment volume in Ukrainia harbors in 2018 was 847 121 TEU ― 17% more than last year.
